Samsung Electronics Licenses OneNAND to STMicroelectronics
Seoul, South Korea -- October 23, 2006 -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced that STMicroelectronics, one of the world’s leading semiconductor manufacturers, has licensed Samsung’s most advanced flash memory, OneNANDTM, to help meet rising demand in various applications including the mobile marketplace.
“Samsung welcomes STMicroelectronics’ decision to support the projected strong continued growth of the world’s highest performing flash memory,” said Yun-Ho Choi, senior vice president of Samsung Electronics’ Semiconductor Business’ Flash Solution Team. ”As a result of STMicroelectronics’ licensing move, handset and other platform designers can more easily specify OneNAND in an expanding range of mobile applications.”
According to the agreement, STMicroelectronics will support Samsung’s OneNAND starting early 2007.
OneNAND’s advanced architecture features NAND core with SRAM and logic elements to emulate a NOR Flash interface. OneNAND provides a sustained data ‘read’ speed of 108 MByte/s, which is four times faster than conventional NAND Flash memory, and a ‘write’ speed of 10 MByte/s, which is more than 46 times faster than multi-level-cell NOR Flash memory. The fast read and write speeds can provide significant performance enhancements in boot-time and application launch-time in mobile handsets and NV-Cache (Non-Volatile Cache) for PC applications.
