Toshiba Selects Xilinx Spartan-3 Generation FPGAs for Latest LCD TVs
SAN JOSE, Calif., and TOKYO, Japan, March 5, 2007 - Xilinx Inc., (NASDAQ: XLNX), the world’s leading provider of programmable logic solutions, today announced that Toshiba Corporation has selected Xilinx low-cost, high-volume Spartan™-3E field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) for its LCD television models WLT68 and WL68 in the REGZA™ series. Toshiba commercialized the WLT68 and WL68 as high-end models for the European and Asian markets, including China.
Xilinx Spartan-3 Generation FPGAs Contribute to Active Vision M100
The use of Xilinx 90nm high-volume FPGAs such as Spartan-3E and Spartan-3 FPGAs in Toshiba’s LCD televisions contributes to higher system performance and reduced development time. Of particular interest is the Active Vision M100 feature—a technology that utilizes Toshiba’s own algorithms to produce sharper, more realistic, and smoother video images by refreshing the picture 100 times per second (100Hz), double the signal scanning rate of mainstream televisions. This produces sharper, more realistic, and better flowing video images.
“Xilinx Spartan-3 Generation FPGAs allow our designers to produce highly flexible memory interfaces, which play an important role in the sophisticated video expression of our Active Vision M100 feature,” commented Toshiyuki Tanabe, technology executive, TV Digital Media Network Company, Toshiba Corporation. “In the LCD television market, where the race to develop new products is intense, faster time to market is key to business success. Xilinx FPGAs offered the flexibility to customize our application, lower system costs, and significantly reduce our product development time. The extensive support provided by Xilinx and its distribution sales team was another factor that led us to choose Xilinx FPGAs over competing solutions.”
