Xilinx Demonstrates Spartan-3 FPGA-based Machine Vision Solution at Vision 2007
STUTTGART, Germany -- Nov. 6, 2007 -- At Vision 2007 Conference, Xilinx, Inc. (Nasdaq: XLNX), the world's leading supplier of programmable logic solutions, today announced it will demonstrate the industry's first FPGA-based GigE Vision IP core solution using its leading low-cost Spartan(TM)-3 generation FPGAs. Designed specifically to meet the specific needs of the Machine Vision industry, the single-chip solution provides a cost-effective, high performance GigE Vision system that allows maximum bandwidth and full throughput. Xilinx is demonstrating the GigE Vision solution at this week's Vision 2007, Feith Sensor to Image GmbH -- Hall 4, Booth D11 and SILICONSOFTWARE -- GmbH, Hall 4, Booth D26, New Stuttgart Trade Fair Center, Stuttgart.
The solution is the result of a design collaboration with Xilinx Alliance members, Feith Sensor to Image GmbH, Finger Lakes Engineering, and SILICONSOFTWARE GmbH leveraging standard Camera Link interface, the GigE Vision IP core, a soft-core tri-mode Ethernet MAC, and optional VisualApplets software.
The GigE Vision solution addresses a significant challenge that Machine Vision and high-performance camera manufacturers face to offer cost-effective, high-speed, industry-standard compliant GigE Vision transport. "The ability to provide gigabit throughput on Xilinx(R) Spartan(TM)-3 generation FPGAs enables manufacturers to maintain performance while significantly lowering the overall bill-of-materials cost, translating to higher margins, and pass-through savings to their customers," said Niladri Roy, senior manager of ISM markets at Xilinx. "The VisualApplets environment eliminates much of the drudgery associated with HDL programming, and enables non-HDL-experts to build professional-grade image processing chains in days instead of weeks, resulting in increased productivity and accelerated time-to-market."
Using the GigE Vision standard allows real time transfer of uncompressed images and data, ideal for high-performance cameras. The soft-core tri-mode Ethernet MAC is optimized for Xilinx Spartan-3 generation FPGAs, keeping costs down by removing dependence on high-priced chips with built-in hardened Ethernet MACs. The VisualApplets software enables quick and easy implementations of a Machine Vision system using fully parameterizable image processing operators.
