Realtek Licenses HEVC (H.265) Decoder from Ittiam for Next Generation Consumer Applications
Ittiam’s optimized HEVC Decoder is selected and licensed by Realtek for their ARM CPU based TV and Set Top Box products
BANGALORE, India -- February 20, 2014 -- Ittiam is pleased to announce Realtek as one of its leading customers in the Consumer Electronics space, with the licensing of HEVC Decoder. The solution licensed is for HEVC decode on ARM CPU based TV SOC. Most recently, at CES 2014, Ittiam Systems announced the availability of highly-optimized HEVC and VP9 software decoder solutions, balancing compute and energy efficiencies.
Ittiam’s solutions were actively evaluated by Realtek before the selection of Ittiam as the Intellectual Property provider for HEVC Decoding needs. This design win corroborates Ittiam’s focus towards addressing the next-generation video compression technologies demanded not just on smartphones but also on consumer devices such as set-top boxes, TVs, smartphones and tablets powered by embedded processors.
Mukund Srinivasan, General Manager for the Consumer and Mobility Business at Ittiam, said, "With the Intelligent Home and Connected device paradigms, the Living room has become the next area of focus for semiconductor players. The focus is on providing differentiation in terms of Quality of Experience, by way of upgradeable software solutions on existing platforms. The HEVC promise of potentially up-to 50% reduction in bandwidth requirements and storage needs is well recognized by the industry and we already see several key Consumer OEMs and Online Video Service Providers moving to HEVC to reap the benefits. Our strong focus on video technologies and deep expertise in Embedded processor architectures has enabled us to deliver compute-optimized and power-efficient software decoders for both HEVC and VP9 on various combinations of Application Processors, DSPs and GPUs."
“We looked at multiple software solutions on HEVC with stringent requirements on performance and quality. The Ittiam solution matched our expectations, and better positions Realtek in the market now that we can offer the differentiation that HEVC provides in the form of optimized products from Ittiam,” said Realtek’s Executive Vice President Jessy Chen. “Ittiam’s HEVC with high compression ratio enables more content to be stored and distributed while everything else remains constant.”
