Sony-Inside Huami Watch: Is It Time for FD-SOI?

PARIS — Without any visible end products to justify its proponents’ ultra-low-energy promise, FD-SOI has struggled to overcome the skepticism of many engineers in the semiconductor industry.
These skeptics keep asking: Where’s the beef? Is there a real product on the commercial market? What are its real benefits?
Well, finally, now it’s official. And it’s a watch. Sony Corp.’s GPS chip — built on 28-nm Fully Depleted Silicon On Insulator (FD-SOI) process — is powering a smartwatch rolled out in China last month by Huami, Xiaomi’s sub-brand.
