LSI Logic offers turnkey Linux-based ADSL Ethernet reference design for home gateway products
- Complete and tested software combined with LSI Logic performance-leading HomeBASE ADSL silicon solution reduces time to market for DSL modem and gateway manufacturers
- Software platform is based on royalty-free Linux operating system, reducing overall system cost
- Service providers benefit from distinctive technologies that increase coverage area and offers new service opportunities
MILPITAS, Calif., Feb. 19, 2003 – LSI Logic Corporation today announced the availability of a complete Linux-based ADSL Ethernet reference design for customer premise equipment (CPE) manufacturers. Building on its HomeBASE™ family of digital subscriber line (xDSL) gateway products, LSI Logic has combined its proven HomeBASE chipset with royalty-free Linux operating system. The reference design provides manufacturers with a complete, cost-effective solution that reduces development time and allows for product differentiation.
Requiring only 2MB FLASH memory and 8 MB SDRAM for further cost efficiency, LSI Logic's complete Linux-based software solution includes Ethernet routing, bridging, network address translation (NAT), Firewall, Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE), and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). To support multiple product configurations, the software solution includes device drivers for a variety of external interfaces including Segmentation and Reassembly (SAR), Discrete Multitone (DMT) and 10/100 Ethernet and is flexible enough to address emerging high performance Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) applications.
"Our Linux-based HomeBASE reference design provides a complete solution with all the hardware and software needed for either bridge or router mode operations, which is unique compared to typical modems on the market today," said Kumar Sivakumar, senior director of the DSL Products business unit, LSI Logic. "In addition to reducing costs and time-to-market, our customers benefit from the LSI Logic CoreWare® portfolio of intellectual property which allows for flexible implementations of next-generation gateway products."
The HomeBASE solution features the performance-leading SpeedREACH™ transport technology and a network processor for superior bandwidth and software performance, increasing coverage area. The HomeBASE solution can also address service provider requirements for new service opportunities, such as voice, video and data distribution capabilities when used with the LSI Logic ZSP® digital signal processing (for VoIP applications), Ethernet, USB, wireless LAN, and mixed-signal cores. LSI Logic's experience in developing complex system-on-a-chip designs, coupled with a strong standard product portfolio allows manufacturers to address a wide range of requirements for the broadband access market.
"ADSL modem manufacturers are certainly familiar with the cost and time-to-market advantages that the robust toolset and source code availability of Linux can bring," said Jaclynn Bumback, research analyst within the Enterprise and Residential Communications group of In-Stat/MDR. "By combining its proven HomeBASE chipset product with the royalty-free Linux operating system, LSI Logic is providing OEMs with more choices at lower overall system prices."
