China’s ambitious late-1990s plan to create numerous high-volume indigenous IC manufacturers in the pure-play foundry segment did not come to fruition, but the Chinese government is still very serious about keeping China and Chinese IC suppliers relevant in the future IC industry.

Gartner Says Worldwide Semiconductor Revenue Grew 7.9 Percent in 2014 (Tuesday Jan. 06, 2015)
Worldwide semiconductor revenue totaled $339.8 billion in 2014, a 7.9 percent increase from 2013 revenue of $315 billion, according to preliminary results by Gartner, Inc. The top 25 semiconductor vendors' combined revenue increased 11.7 percent, which was more than the overall industry's growth.

Global Semiconductor Sales Through November Outpace 2013 Sales (Monday Jan. 05, 2015)
SIA today announced that worldwide sales of semiconductors reached $29.7 billion for the month of November 2014, an increase of 9.1 percent from the November 2013 total of $27.2 billion and a slight decrease of 0.1 percent from the October 2014 total.

French Telecom Firm Follows ARM Server Route (Monday Jan. 05, 2015)
Iliad SA, a French provider of telecommunications services, is planning to launch a cloud software hosting service in January 2015 that will use ARM servers based on Marvell chips. The service will come from Iliad's Online.net subsidiary, which has been offering preview demonstrations of its C1 server at labs.online.net.

Calxeda Rides Again Courtesy of Taiwan (Monday Jan. 05, 2015)
ARM-based server processor technology developed by startup Calxeda Inc. – which closed its doors on Dec. 24, 2013 – is set to make it to market courtesy of a cloud service company called AtGames Holdings Ltd. (Taipei, Taiwan).

However the growth rates for these devices are slowing as they have become more prevalent. Tablet shipments are expected to reach 229 million units in 2014, according to Gartner, equal to 73% of PC units. IDC projects smartphones will exceed 1.2 billion units in 2014, accounting for about two-thirds of total mobile phones.
